One of most lacking thing in 3D printing was the ability to print circuit embedded designs. But now there is a solution to that - Functionalise. It is a startup by a software engineer who faced the same problem and ended up making a make shift nano material lab in his house.
The solution that Functionalise offers are plastics with different conductivity. Thus, is able to create a circuit without the need to have metal components (this still remains a problem - to print metal and plastic together). Here is their kickstarter video:The other attempts in this field includes NanoDimension, which just received $500K Grant to develop a 3D Printer to print circuits. They are working not on printing the complete structure with the circuit inside but just on printing the PCB's.
If both these projects go as planned, we might soon no longer need to assemble devices. We will be able to just print a watch or display or maybe a iPhone.
